Tax officials took possession of passengers’ suitcases at Lisbon airport

The coordinator of the Lisbon Airport Fiscal Authority and 16 employees took possession of hundreds of “lost and found” items worth thousands of euros.

Now you know what probably happened to your laptop, watch, smartphone or any other item you “lost” at the Portuguese airport.

They say that they only kept the items after the 90-day deadline. Of course they do, we really believe that 😉 Basically, it was (is) Christmas every day at the Portuguese airport lost and found department.

These thieves were such nice and generous people that they sometimes even offered the stolen goods to their friends.

To top it all off, and in the best Portuguese style, the judges decided that these employees will not be prohibited from performing public duties, on the contrary, they will be able to “work” in other wings (no pun intended) of the airport. Good to know!

Coordinator of the Lisbon Airport Tax Authority convicted of embezzlement – she had 14 thousand euros in “lost and found” goods at home

In total, 16 employees were convicted, who will continue to work at AT but not at the airport.

The 16 employees of the Tax Authority at Lisbon airport suspected of having appropriated hundreds of “lost and found” objects, valued at thousands of euros, heard the ruling this Thursday afternoon. The crimes were committed between April 2018 and June 2020. All defendants were sentenced to suspended sentences, the highest of which, over four years, went to the coordinator of the Humberto Delgado passenger and baggage control sector.

Ana Paula Silva, during the trial, denied the suspicion of appropriation of assets. However, she admitted that the removal of objects after the 90-day deadline for them to be claimed was a widespread practice.

During searches at the residence of Ana Paula Silva, aged 65, assets valued at 14 thousand euros were seized, including 50 watches.
At another employee’s house, 90 of the objects removed from the warehouse were found, including tablets and smartphones that had reportedly been forgotten on TAP planes.
In the residence of another employee, in addition to goods stolen from the airport, war-caliber ammunition and a gun were found. In this case, the defendant was also sentenced to a suspended sentence for possession of an illegal weapon.

The 16 employees were convicted of embezzlement. Another seven people to whom they gave gifts taken from the “lost and found” responded by reception.

The panel of judges also decided that employees are not prohibited from exercising public functions. They continue to work at the Labor Authority but not at the airport, having been distributed across other jobs.

Why is the CTT and the Portuguese Customs “Security” are allowed to capture people’s mail and keep it for unannounced periods of time without notifying the sender and the recipient, thus stealing the mail? International mail from within the EU disappears in the Lisbon Mail Processing and Treatment Center to never be seen again.
