Jurist ‘caught’ asking for 100 thousand euros ‘kickbacks’

In Portugal everything is for sale, including obviously “favorable” court decisions.

A Public Finance Jurist at the Administrative and Fiscal Court of Porto demanded for ‘bribes’ worth thousands of euros, in exchange for the State losing court cases.

Imagine that this jurist was one of those responsible for defending the positions of the Tax Agency in cases brought by taxpayers! Wow! Portugal at its best!

A jurist who worked as a representative of the Public Treasury at the Administrative and Fiscal Court of Porto was heard asking a businessman in the construction industry for ‘gloves’ worth 100 thousand euros. The counterpart, Jornal de Notícias reveals today, was to let the State lose prosecution cases.

This Sunday, Jornal de Notícias (JN) headlines the story of a Finance jurist, named António Rocha, who worked at the Administrative and Fiscal Court of Porto, and who was heard asking for ‘gloves’ worth 100 thousand euros.

At issue, according to the same publication, is compensation for letting the State lose cases.

The recipient of the request for ‘gloves’ was, reveals JN, a businessman in the construction industry, Jorge Cerqueira, who will be close to the former mayor of Matosinhos, Narciso Miranda.

Data from the investigation, which is still being carried out by the Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DIAP) of the Public Ministry of Porto, indicates that businessman Jorge Cerqueira came forward with an amount of four to five thousand euros in notes to jurist António Rocha.

It should be noted that the jurist worked as a representative of the Public Treasury at the Administrative and Fiscal Court of Porto, being one of those responsible for defending the Tax Authority’s positions in cases brought by taxpayers.
