A lawyer from Leiria and a woman were arrested this Tuesday on suspicion of fraud and embezzlement in obtaining subsidies and falsifying documents. In “Operation Invovar”, carried out by the National Unit Against Corruption of the Judicial Police,

Another 21 defendants, 12 individuals and nine companies, were also constituted, with inspectors seizing nine high-end vehicles, among them, DN learned, a Ferrari and a McLaren.

According to the information gathered, in recent years the couple dedicated themselves to submitting applications for European Community funds for projects in the field of industry and recycling, but inflated their costs.

The projects presented to the IAPMEI, the Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation, could be either real or completely fictitious, according to a source linked to the investigation, with incentives made through the QREN, the National Strategic Reference Framework.

During the operation called “Inovar”, which involved 160 members of the PJ, a criminal investigating judge and a public prosecutor, 53 searches were carried out in the areas of Leiria, Coimbra, Lisbon and Porto, of which twenty were in homes, two in law offices and thirty-one in non-domiciliary offices.

According to the PJ, two non-residential searches were also carried out in Germany.

The PJ also states that the investigation will continue in order to further gather evidence and determine the economic benefits illegally obtained to the detriment of the Portuguese State, the total value of which will exceed five million euros.

The detainees will be presented to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for their first judicial interrogation at the Central Criminal Investigation Court.
