Parents blame hospitals in Coimbra and Figueira da Foz for their daughter’s death. Carina, 26 years old, was discharged on the day of surgery.

The death of Carina S., aged 26, with cerebral palsy, on October 7th, a week after undergoing dental surgery, led her parents to file complaints of negligence against Hospital dos Covões, in Coimbra, where the young woman underwent surgery, on September 29th, and Figueira da Foz, where she died. The complaint was formalized with the Public Ministry and in the complaint books of the two hospitals.

For the parents, the surgery was simple and carried few risks. So much so that they weren’t even surprised when

Hospital dos Covões decided to discharge the young woman on the same day she underwent surgery.

On Friday, September 30th, Carina was unable to eat. The next day, she complained of shortness of breath and her mother took her to Figueira da Foz Hospital.

“Carina was consulted by a doctor, who told me to prepare. I didn’t even understand what she was saying”, reports her mother.

Amid screams of panic and threats of legal action, the hospital decided to admit Carina. She spent the rest of Saturday without eating, and only on Sunday, October 2nd, did she receive serum, at 12:00. She died on the seventh, at Figueira da Foz Hospital.

To the CM, the Coimbra Hospital Center, which includes Hospital dos Covões, clarified that the surgery took place without complications. Figueira da Foz Hospital lamented the death that occurred in its services and highlighted that all hospital care procedures were followed.
