432 doctors investigated for fraud worth 943 million euros

Nearly 1 billion euros stolen from the State by doctors, pharmacists, service providers and users through fraud in the National Health Service.

Theft of prescriptions and medical vignettes, prescription of drugs with high levels of government reimbursement, and falsification of prescriptions to purchase drugs at multiple pharmacies in a given region.

That’s a lot of crooks and a lot of money in one fell swoop!

The State will have been harmed by 943 million euros due to fraud in the National Health Service.

In four years, the Information Exploration Unit – a team working for the Ministry of Health specialized in detecting fraudulent acts in the NHS –

has already sent 573 cases for investigation, involving 432 doctors, 189 service providers and six users.

The theft of prescriptions and medical vignettes, the abusive prescription of medicines with high levels of State reimbursement and the falsification of prescriptions without doctors’ knowledge, to purchase medicines in several pharmacies in a given region, are examples of cases detected.

The unit, established in September 2012, also found suspicions of collusion between doctors and pharmacists.
